Community-led growth: The Journey of FindMCServer.com

Community-led Growth: The Journey of FindMCServer.com

Redefining how players and creators discover and connect with each other

By: Maria Tamellini

March 18th, 2024

Online gaming thrives on community influence, serves as the driving force behind engagement and expansion, and sits at the very core of our product development. The synergy between community and product evolution is illustrated in Minecraft, a game well-known as a hub of creativity and collaboration with over 300 million copies sold since its release in 2011.

In November of 2023, the world was introduced to the Official Minecraft Server List, a joint project by Mojang Studios and GamerSafer. This new website is a testament to the relationship between community and program development. Launching this website with active creator participation boosts GamerSafer’s mission to ensure positive and safer gaming experiences.

Together with both players and servers, we have built a Minecraft server list that enhances discoverability and upholds player safety and community engagement values.

Players love Minecraft for its ability to bring people together to share their creativity and explore the game with others. The Official Minecraft Server List reflects this love, a place where the community’s voice is heard and valued, and where the shared journey of players, developers, and industry leaders continues to evolve and inspire. FindMCServer is now here to redefine how players discover and connect with each other.

Building from the Block Up

Unlike traditional server list websites where large servers with hefty ad budgets dominate, FindMCServer.com levels the playing field while still keeping the player’s interests and safety first. It offers distinctive communities a place to show off their creativity and unique features, ranging from servers designed for newbies to those tailored for seasoned crafters, from vanilla gameplay to extensively modded game modes. When we set out to build this site, we wanted to capture the wide range of player and server owner interests and take on Minecraft’s global scale, readily accessible and free for all to use, regardless of where they come from.

But we didn’t just want to build a server list, we wanted to create a matchmaking and discoverability engine that allows players to find the exact communities they’re searching for. This required us to innovate with new ideas, constantly tested by players and community managers involved in our alpha phase.

We invited creators with over a decade of experience in the scene to join for the first year of the development to provide their feedback and encourage a feeling that the site is built with the community. The initial servers that joined the site were chosen and invited based on their existing interests in creating experiences with trust and safety built-in. This allowed us to design the site with a foundation of player safety while spotlighting leaders that the broader community of creators look up to.

“A challenge I’ve faced was finding a way to share the consensus of small server owners with a single voice. It’s difficult to let Mojang or GamerSafer know if you’re sharing a personal opinion versus experiences of a decade. But they have both listened quite well and taken all the feedback under consideration.”

– mrfloris (1moreblock)

The journey from concept to launch was marked by several phases: closed alpha, closed beta, open beta, and finally, the fully public launch in November, 2023. Each phase played a crucial role in refining the platform, with the community’s role evolving alongside. Early supporters, numbering around 70 alpha participants, were instrumental in this process.

“…I both wanted to help and hoped it would increase new player joins. The process helped our staff team clarify some server goals and brought in quite a few new players.”

– Momshroom (TrekCraft)

Crafting Connections and Stronger Communities

We had to meet players and server teams where they were to get this project started. One notable aspect of this strategy is our emphasis on creating a welcoming and inclusive environment at GamerSafer. Both GamerSafer Discord community members and our staff were encouraged to engage in discussions constructively within a positive and respectful atmosphere. While we did not shy away from hard conversations about tough community management topics, any contentious topics were addressed promptly, which set the stage for kind and open-minded conversations within the community.

Reaching out to server operators on platforms like Discord proved to be an effective way to foster collaboration and build trust over time. By connecting with key leaders in various Discord communities, we gained valuable insights that helped us shape the development of FindMCServer.com.

“The community and staff at GamerSafer are always welcoming, regardless of the topics or background of what you wish to discuss. I find that it is very easy to communicate with both members and staff alike in a civil positive atmosphere. Any topics which are deemed unacceptable are quickly shut down or any discussions which seem to be leading to negative undertones are defused professionally and cordially.”

– Aequotis (Cubed Community)

One observation is the community’s receptiveness to changes when accompanied by clear explanations. By actively participating in Discord communities resistant to proposed changes, GamerSafer members have been able to address concerns directly, leading to a positive shift in community sentiment. Decisions that at one time may have been met with confusion or frustration were often received with appreciation and understanding.

Ultimately, the success of these strategies hinges on the tangible benefits experienced by server operators and players. The Official Minecraft Server List’s positive impact on servers and players’ experiences has been instrumental in garnering support and participation from the Minecraft community.

Navigating Challenges in Community Building

Managing a pre-existing, active Minecraft server community involves integrating diverse experiences and setups. Once FindMCServer.com was officially announced across Minecraft and GamerSafer’s social media channels, players were requesting frequent updates on a day-to-day basis. To address this, and based on suggestions from active members, we created a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document and Discord /tags to handle common queries and empower our super fans to answer those questions on their own.

With the influx of server applications, another hurdle was clarifying the progress of the server review. All servers must be manually reviewed by GamerSafer first, and then Mojang after, to ensure they meet the Minecraft Usage Guidelines and our own site rules. We tackled the commonly asked question, “When will my server be listed?” by adding a prominent review status banner on the server’s edit page.

Effective communication with a community that holds strong opinions on various topics requires careful attention to language and ensuring alignment on key definitions and concepts. The team engaged in numerous discussions with the community on topics like chat moderation, monetization models, competitive leaderboards, age-appropriate content, and loot crates, fostering a two-way relationship based on active listening and shared values.

“One of the most important lessons for me was to involve a group of users from the start, asking them about their expectations so they could contribute all the way. Understanding users’ pains to best address them is vital.”

– Guilherme, GamerSafer Senior Dev

Upholding a balance between promoting one’s server and considering the broader community perspective is something some site users are reflecting on for the first time. Still, our welcoming environment leads to inventive ideas and solutions. We always want to encourage creativity and diversity, not restrict it to one specific way of doing things, and that’s what this community-minded approach has allowed us to achieve.

Thriving: Uniting Safety and Fun

The partnership between GamerSafer, Mojang Studios, and the Minecraft community stands out as a groundbreaking initiative that merges player safety with fun. At the heart of this joint effort lies the principle of voluntary compliance and positive incentives for creators.

GamerSafer and Mojang Studios worked together to create a detailed process for evaluating each Minecraft server application, ensuring that trust and safety standards are maintained within every server’s game modes. This process allows for personalized attention to the unique offerings of each server community, striking a balance between safety and creative fun. Servers that meet these standards are rewarded with Badges to showcase their work and commitment to safe and enjoyable experiences.

Initially, server operators had concerns that prioritizing trust and safety might hinder player retention and sustainability. But, through regular chats and conversations with our review team, which can last several weeks as servers work to take steps towards the goals, these apprehensions were calmed and the balances were found. Players’ viewpoints also evolved; modern players seek out enjoyable gaming sessions, while creators, often focused on the creative and technical hurdles, ask for guidance in implementing trust and safety protocols.

The results speak for themselves. During the first year’s beta phase, 85% of the invited servers implemented trust and safety measures, becoming compliant with the site and Mojang Studios’ guidelines. After the official launch, the impact grew even more pronounced, with smaller communities witnessing expansion and server operators noting an upsurge in player engagement, surpassing their previous experiences with conventional advertising methods.

Within the first week of the site’s official launch, 40% of the servers that applied had already taken the initial steps required to be approved to be listed, with many others following soon after. The initial impact on these servers showed smaller communities growing by as much as 400%, and some server operators shared how the site had brought them more players than they had ever gotten before. Even when compared to advertising on third-party server list websites that cost them thousands of dollars per month, FindMCServer.com had better results.

Building Tomorrow’s MC: Future Aspirations for community collaboration

As we look towards the future, community work will continue to be an indispensable part of GamerSafer’s initiatives. It’s foundational to our approach – every action we take is designed to protect, empower, and connect online communities meaningfully and authentically. Our vision for the FindMCServer.com community is about pioneering new paths and setting benchmarks for what a safe, inclusive, and engaging online gaming industry can be.

Both in our Discord and in our server review process, we see questions and comments every day from server teams asking for resources to create thriving communities. Many server owners are only just beginning on their path-to-pro journey, with some of them having their first job as gaming community managers. They want to learn as much as they can, so we’re exploring ways to provide them with more educational materials and programs to help them along the way.

We also envision servers collaborating to create joint events and activities, encouraging players to explore and enjoy a wider variety of game modes. This initiative aims to break down silos and promote a sense of unity and shared experience among different servers.

Training community members to spot-check servers and understand the nuances of what is acceptable and what isn’t is another key goal. This peer-review system would not only enhance the platform’s safety and scalability but also give community members a sense of ownership and involvement in maintaining standards.

As online gaming continues to evolve with new technologies and experiences, maintaining a direct line of communication with community members becomes crucial. This approach allows us to understand the impact of the changing gaming landscape and positively influence the narrative. Our contributions, initially focused on US and European-based servers, will expand to include other regions, reflecting Minecraft’s global appeal.

Celebrating our Shared Journey

Reflecting on FindMCServer.com’s evolution over the past year, we cherish the accomplishments and insights we’ve gained. Our path has been marked by collaboration, innovation, and community-driven progress. Importantly, we can successfully overcome the “us vs them” mentality by establishing shared goals and celebrating our achievements together. This unity fortifies our mission, proving that when we work collectively, there’s no limit to what we can achieve.

While community work demands time, planning, and constant engagement, it has shown its value through the vibrant and secure environment we have nurtured together.

We would love for you to join us on this adventure! Whether you are a server owner, a player, or an advocate for fostering safe and inclusive online communities, our invitation is open to you. Your insights, feedback, and involvement can shape the future of FindMCServer.com and online gaming. Together, we can innovate, grow, and establish new benchmarks for what a gaming community can accomplish.

FindMCServer.com: A Game-Changer for Minecraft Servers and Fans

FindMCServer.com: A Game-Changer for Minecraft Servers and Fans

GamerSafer and Mojang have partnered together to launch the Official Minecraft Server List!

Hello, Minecraft enthusiasts!

Ever felt lost in the vast world of third-party Minecraft servers, unsure which ones will have a great experience?

We get it! With hundreds of thousands of servers to choose from, it can be quite the task to find one that you’ll love. This new site will help parents find communities where their kids will have positive experiences.

That’s where FindMCServer.com steps in; the Official Minecraft Server List by GamerSafer in collaboration with Mojang Studios.

You can also read about the Official Minecraft Server List over on the announcement blog post at Minecraft.net: https://aka.ms/MCE-ListingBlogPost

Let’s dive into what’s up:

Teaming Up to Find Amazing Minecraft Servers

Last year, GamerSafer joined forces with another cool company you might have heard of: Mojang Studios!

The goal? Use our joint Minecraft server know-how and tech expertise to make sure players of all ages and backgrounds can get the most fun, appropriate, and high-quality Minecraft server experiences.

Plus, we’ve done a lot of research to find that when gamers find communities that they really vibe with, it leads to better connection, belonging, and more positive interactions. We want to help players find servers they love and raise the bar across the entire Minecraft server scene while creating excellent memories.

That’s the spirit behind the Official Minecraft Server List.

No Funny Games, Just Fair Play for ALL Ages

What sets FindMCServer.com apart? No pay-to-win slots. No ads cluttering your view. No playing favorites. If a server’s legit and has been reviewed as following the Minecraft Usage Guidelines (the “MUG”), it’s fair game to be found on the site.

Don’t just think of FindMCServer.com as a server listing website, think of it as a server discovery engine, allowing players to find exactly the kinds of gameplay and community experiences that they’re eager for. It’s not just about picking the first server shown on a list, it’s about landing on the exact kind of server you’ll love to join for the long-term.

Every server listed on this site is required to be reviewed by the Mojang Studios Enforcement Team to follow all of the Minecraft Usage Guidelines (the ”MUG”) and meet the standards that everyone can benefit from.

By the way, we have a page dedicated to information parents and their kids might want to know about, over here

Level-Up with Server Badges

Here’s another cool part: Server Badges.

Think of these Badges as collectible achievements for servers that go the extra mile. These Badges shout-out Minecraft communities that are not just fun, but also more interested in player safety and inclusivity. Of course, just because a server is listed or has earned safety badges is not a guarantee of safety. Online safety requires constant parental involvement and child education.

Every server on the site will be required to have two Badges to start off: Community Basics and Builder’s Benchmark (which tells you that they are MUG Compliant). After that, servers are welcome to achieve other optional Badges to show off a stronger commitment to player safety, privacy, security, and great community engagement.

Did you find a server with more Badges? That’s a community that wants to go even further in their efforts to have an awesome time with their players. As servers earn more Badges, they’ll have more opportunities to be found in different areas and pages on the site, such as the top of search results, on the home page’s Discover section, or in an article dedicated to servers for families!

You can learn more about currently available Server Badges over here

Get in on the Ground Floor

FindMCServer.com is already here, and we’re scouting for servers to join during these early days and hit the ground running with us!

If you manage a server or are part of a server staff team, this is your shot to get in, earn some early Badges, and get noticed by players that are already coming to the site.

Head to FindMCServer.com and in the top-right menu click “Login/Register”. After that, you’ll see an option in the menu to go to the Server Admin page and add your server there. This will start our server review process, and you’ll be on your way to showing off for players on the site once that process is completed.

You’ll also get to see and give us feedback on brand new features we’re working on releasing soon. We want to build this site with you to make it the best it can be!

Wrapping it Up

FindMCServer.com isn’t just another site—it’s a big new adventure for Minecraft multiplayer fans. If you’re a Minecraft server owner, or just a gamer looking for a new community to join, come check out the site! Let’s grow an amazing Minecraft server scene together.

Heads up: Some features and Badges might change as we fine-tune the site based on feedback.

GamerSafer & Init Esports: a Winnning Collaboration

Organising an esports tournament of any kind, online or in-person, is a logistical achievement: for Init Esports, who decided to make their one-of-a-kind event Screen to Speed both online and in-person, it was a tour de force. Launched in December 2022, the event was designed by women for women. Over the course of two months, competitors from all over the world were invited to join the qualifiers online, playing the sim racing game iRacing. By racing and making their way up the leaderboard, competitors could qualify to be flown to Las Vegas, where the finals would take place in person, during a real NASCAR event. The prize: $15K cash, a pro-level racing simulator, VIP passes to the Kelly Moss IMSA Race, and the chance to drive a Kelly Moss Porsche on the NASCAR track in Las Vegas.

For Stefy Bau, founder and CEO of Init Esports, the event was a much-needed first event bringing women into competitive sim racing: “Sim racing is a very male-dominated industry. Init Esports is the only women-led esports organisation in sim racing around the world, so we decided to speak with the voice of authenticity through something impactful and fun to involve as many women and non-binary people from around the world.” One of their first challenges, of course, would be the registration and safety of competitors as they joined the online qualifiers: as a female-only, worldwide event, safeguards and enforcement were necessary. That’s where Init’s long-term technology partner GamerSafer came into play: their cutting-edge player verification technology guarantees the absence of fake or duplicated accounts, ensuring players follow competition rules and promoting a level playing field for all participants.

Maria Tamellini, co-founder and COO of GamerSafer, felt secure in the use of their software in the context of Screen to Speed: “GamerSafer’s solution is mature and onboarded players from 15 countries in a small-time frame. Whenever there is a competition designed to expand space based on gender, there are natural debates about how this is translated into enforcement, rules, and communication. Having clarity about end goals and rules and embracing meaningful conversations is essential in this constantly evolving space and the Init team successfully managed those.” Stefy describes the solution with a motorsport analogy: “It is akin to a driver’s licence: because we are working with games that are two- or four-wheels related, we try to make that connection to the real world.”

GamerSafer’s system also provided support for the distribution of game licences, as well as overall data privacy management and compliance, giving Screen to Speed a solid track to race on. Stefy truly believes that it’s incredibly important to have people be part of a community that is safe, first and foremost: “Using GamerSafer’s software is incredibly important because then people can be verified, therefore they can feel like they completely belong in a community that is like-minded. By bringing accountability in, all of a sudden we see a decrease in bullying, trolling, and even cheating. We really love the relationship we have with them.”

And so how did the live March 5th race go? “It was fantastic,” says Stefy. “I like to say that we were hoping to make a wave, but instead we created a positive hurricane. Not only were all the participants women and non-binary, but the commentators were women, and we had guests and drivers coming over who were female. And of course, it was led by me and Victoria Thomas, the co-owner of Kelly Moss. This whole thing, Screen to Speed, is really about attaching the digital world to the real world. It’s a good way to create a pathway for people who are interested in motor sports and who do play games, because motorsports are really expensive, so by lowering the barrier of entry, then it becomes much easier to get more people in. For us, it’s all about creating critical mass at the bottom, so then we can open up doors and show the different opportunities, even in the work space, that can be coming up through gaming and motorsports as a whole.” This year’s edition was the first of what will hopefully become a long series of sim racing events for Init Esports.

Finally, Stefy and Maria are not done working together. Their next collaboration is already under way: Init’s new program Sim4STEM just launched for a first time in May of 2023. They’re partnering with Indie 500, in Indianapolis, and getting 200 high school girls from the area to participate in a four-day, hands-on program. “We’ve managed to be a full-on stem.org accredited program, so they’d be doing STEM activities which would be motorsports-related, and what they learn could then be applied in the simulators. It’s another way to get new people that would otherwise not get involved in sim racing or video games in general. By bringing them and making them feel a part of the community, with GamerSafer being an important part of that.” Maria echoes that sentiment: “We are excited about our developments and collaboration with them. More to come!”

How GS Crosslink protects you on Discord

How GS Crosslink protects you on Discord

The leading link moderation and anti-virus bot for Discord moderators and managers

LISTEN:

Whether you’re a seasoned Discord community manager or a longtime user, you’ve no doubt seen one of the many link or filebased attacks that have plagued Discord over the past and current years. From GIFs and videos that crash your app, to scam pages that try to steal your account, Discord is constantly facing new threats and struggling to keep up with new attack vectors on the platform.

This is where bots come into play. Crosslink has been protecting users from malicious links for over 2 years, consistently reacting to entire new attack vectors and combating scams and phishing in every way they’ve cropped up. So, how does the GS Crosslink bot keep you and your server safe?

Detecting new threats

GS Crosslink doesn’t just use a limited list of ‘bad’ or ‘good’ domains. Every time a link is sent in Discord, GS Crosslink resolves that link to the final destination, and checks how safe that URL is on every step of the way. This means nobody can hide an IP grabber in a shortlink and the shortfalls in Discord’s link detection are accounted for. Besides that, for every unique domain GS Crosslink detects, it’ll perform checks against it, gathering as much information about its history and security, then conclude how safe it believes that domain to be.

Crosslink’s checks utilizes the full suite of tools that internet governing bodies available. Once Crosslink has established its own reputation score for a domain, it’ll cross-reference with third party providers and relevant platforms to double-check if another provider has seen it before. For example, the GS Crosslink bot will know about a phishing link in an e-mail that Google finds, or about new scam links hitting Discord DM’s. That also applies for website data breaches. Since the release of v3 we’ve already classified 23,000+ new domains and counting!

Scanning files for malware

Links aren’t the only thing GS Crosslink protects you and your users from. If you’re a premium customer, you also get access to Crosslinks anti-virus. More in-depth than Discord’s own anti-virus and with an average response time at less than one second, our anti-virus helps protect your server from viruses, malware, and even Discord-specific token grabbers.

That’s not all Crosslink does with files. GS Crosslink can detect and react to any malformed video file that could cause the Discord app to crash, scan text files for links to filter, and classify all Discord uploads into easily configurable file types. If you’re a free user without the anti-virus, you can still choose to delete potentially dangerous files!

Ultimate configurability

GS Crosslink has been rebuilt to make configuration as straightforward as possible for users. Our config system classifies links and files into easy-to-understand categories and gives you complete control over exactly how every single category is responded to. On top of that, free users can individually define responses for domains and links, giving them complete, low-level control over how Crosslink reacts to content in their server. Premium users can bypass this 25 entry limit, allowing for an incredibly customized experience!

Why GS Crosslink?

Our bot has been keeping servers safe for over 2 years, reacting to multitudes of unique threats within hours. GS Crosslink has been able to react to new malicious files, links, and domains within minutes of them existing on Discord, sometimes even detecting them as suspicious before they ever hit Discord.

It’s also a bot that consistently provides more configurability and reactivity than other moderation bots. So, go ahead and give it a try today! Existing free users should consider trying our premium plans for leveled up protection!

Femme Gamers are on the rise and GamerSafer is with them

We are proud to announce a GamerSafer and Femme Gaming partnership

LISTEN:

Femme Gaming is a gaming organization promoting safe and inclusive spaces for female gamers to compete and showcase their talents, and we are proud to announce a partnership with them. GamerSafer’s trust and safety expertise, as well as our technologies, will help level up proactive protection measures for the #FemmeArmy community.

The future is female, and games are no exception. According to NewZoo, nearly half of all gamers are women. And while women represent an equal portion of gamers across many of the largest markets, they often have their unique gaming preferences and behaviors. For example, female gamers are more likely to play games on their mobile devices than their male counterparts. Also, they stake a considerable share of the most dedicated gamer personas identified by research

Shielding femme gamers is a pressing demand. Anti-Defamation League, a world-leading anti-hate organization, reported that harassment in online multiplayer games has increased over the past three years despite growing efforts and recommendations to reduce disruptive behaviors. Five out of six adults (83%) ages 18-45 experienced harassment in online games—representing over 80 million adult gamers.

Moreover, the most significant increases in identity-based harassment occurred among adult women (49% in 2021, compared to 41% in 2020). Another study, made by Bryter – The Female Games Survey, shows that toxicity towards women is increasing over time and 64% of the participants in their survey, all women, answered they were abused in-game by male gamers in the last year. 1 in 5 say toxicity makes them not want to play again.

These reports reinforce the importance of deploying a wider range of strategies, tools, and processes to create safer and more welcoming gaming spaces. Video games are known for being entertaining, but in one of the surveys from YouGovAmerica, the public recognized that they’re not always inclusive.

Global Data: How consumers view video games around the world. Source: YouGov America, May 2021

We are thrilled to join Femme Gaming. Together, we’re taking action on these issues, adding new use cases about proactive measures, and supporting both female gamers and the gaming industry at large. Join us in creating a future where everyone can have amazing experiences in games by following along at the social media links below.

Player vs Vaping: Using Minecraft for Good

Players vs Vaping: Using Minecraft for Good

GamerSafer partnered with MindCo Health and Stanford Reach Lab to deliver Minecraft’s first vaping prevention and cessation experience.

LISTEN:

Did you know that teen vaping in the US is at an all-time high? In recent years, vaping amongst high-school and middle-school students has reached epidemic levels with over 5 million students reporting vaping.

Meet the newest educational Minecraft adventure map designed to educate youth about vaping risks and impacts, backed by GamerSafer, MindCo Health, and the Stanford Medicine Reach Lab.

The Problem:

Vaping leads to many health issues for teens, and more are starting the habit every year.

An increasing number of teens are vaping nicotine/tobacco and/or cannabis/THC products, with record numbers of youth addicted to nicotine as e-cigarette and vaping companies market nicotine delivery devices directly to adolescents. Almost 20% of high school and 5% of middle school students have used an e-cigarette in the past 30 days. Every day, more and more parents, educators, and youth are asking for help.

“When I tell kids there are 400,000 smokers dying each year and the tobacco industry is looking to them to replace the next one who dies, it really wakes them up.’

– Dr. Bonnie Halpern-Felsher of Reach Lab Stanford, co-developer on the project

The Project:

Meeting and educating youth about vaping risks where they are

Leveraging Minecraft’s platform and capillarity, thousands of teenagers can now engage with vaping cessation and prevention content directly from their homes.

GamerSafer partnered Minecraft servers and customers are working alongside us to bring vaping education to their players through an engaging adventure map. Players can have fun completing challenging puzzles and mini-games while seamlessly answering questions and learning about the harmful effects of vaping.

The gameplay takes place at the start of the school year in the fictitious Dark Forest High School, with characters that will lead the player through challenges while educating them about the risks and harms of vaping.

Once a player completes the map, they’re given a special cosmetic prize that they can use elsewhere on the server. It’s a win-win-win for players who can learn about the impact of vaping while playing a fun map to win a prize!

The anonymized data collected in game, will help researchers to understand player’s knowledge and behaviors and craft new studies and prevention-related initiatives.

Players join the map through GamerSafer’s Minecraft server partners

The Collaborators:

This project was created by Stanford Reach Lab, MindCo Health, and GamerSafer

Stanford Medicine Reach Lab – Dr. Halpern-Felsher’s Reach lab at Stanford University School of Medicine is at the forefront of research, education, prevention, and advocacy regarding nicotine delivery devices.

MindCo Health – MindCo is a virtual reality digital therapy company based in Silicon Valley, providing hospitals and organizations with the tools they need to become smoke-free and reduce their workforce stress levels.

GamerSafer – GamerSafer’s vision is to scale online safety and positive and fair play experiences to millions of players worldwide. Using computer vision and artificial intelligence, its identity management solution helps multiplayer games, esports platforms, and online communities defeat fraud, crimes, and disruptive behaviors.

Expanding Impact with GSBans and GSMasterKey

Expanding Impact with GSBans and GSMasterKey

Our Minecraft offerings continue to grow as we roll-out new a new service and plugin!

LISTEN:

This past month we continued to work hard to bring more valuable resources to the Minecraft server scene. With our new GSBans plugin and GSMasterKey service for new communities, we are excited to help servers kick off towards success on the right foot.

GSMasterKey: Permission and Punishment Setups for New Servers

When first starting off a brand new Minecraft server, one challenge for new server owners to overcome is in figuring out their permissions and punishments systems. These are critical pieces for Minecraft servers to have in place on day one, but they can take a lot of experience to know what to put in place, and can also be quite tedious to set up.

What are “Permissions”?

Permissions are what Minecraft servers use to grant players their various roles, commands, and accessible content. While staff get one set of permissions in order to issue chat mutes or investigate who griefed a plot of land, other players will be restricted to only the gameplay mechanics the server owner wants them to have.

On even the most basic servers there can be dozens if not hundreds of permissions to go through and put in place, and that number grows as more features are added to the gameplay. On networks, which allow many servers to be connected to under one server address, the complexity and mess of permissions can be tough to get a handle on.

Without permissions set in place at the server’s launch, you can end up with mechanical chaos that hurts the first impressions players have on the server.

What are “Punishments”?

Punishments, on the other hand, can be simple to setup in theory, but difficult to train staff on as the community culture starts to develop a mind of its own. Punishments include bans, kicks, mutes, jails, cuffs, and more, which server staff will use to enforce the rules and keep disruptive players from doing too much harm to the vibes.

But how do servers know what rules to put in place? And what nuances do staff need to be aware of before they dish out permanent bans to every player that does something wrong? On top of that, every server community is different, with some having stricter or looser rules to go by.

GSMasterKey helps with both of those challenges

Minecraft server owners that want to save themselves time and headaches are now welcome to order our brand new GSMasterKey service. Once ordered, we’ll get to work identifying their community vision and needs. Then we’ll develop strategies for their punishments and staff training, as well as organize their player permissions!

Once we’re finished with the setup, we deliver documentation and notes to the server owner so that they can put their plans into action and launch the server the moment they’re ready.

You can learn a lot more about all of the details included in the GSMasterKey service by checking out the service page, linked here!

GSBans: A Modern Punishment Plugin w/ Deep Analytics

Along with GSMasterKey, we are also proud to release our new introductory plugin for Minecraft server owners that are looking for a modern punishments plugin that helps them understand their communities better. GSBans is now available for $5 at MC-Market, making it easy for staff teams to get hooked in and start taking advantage of some of the tools we have to offer.

We wrote an entire blog post about GSBans over on our GamerSafer for Minecraft blog, here, but here are some of the highlights of what this plugin brings to the table:

GSBans Feature Overview:

If you’d like to learn more about GSBans, check out our announcement blog post linked just above, or head to the MC-Market product page, here.

Overall, March has been an incredible month for the GamerSafer team, and we are eager to meet more passionate crafters that want to launch Minecraft servers with the best tools and team standing right behind them. Let’s game on!

Our New GSBans Plugin Brings Modern Enforcement Strategies to Minecraft

Introducing GSBans: A Modern Punishment Plugin for Minecraft Servers

A Minecraft server plugin for rule enforcement, staff management, and punishments with support from professionals

LISTEN:

We are pleased to announce our brand new plugin for Minecraft Java Edition Servers (with Bedrock support via Geyser), GSBans! This plugin brings the punishment and rule enforcement features of our GSAuth service to a broad range of Minecraft servers at an affordable price, and we’re just getting started.

In all of our conversations with hundreds of Minecraft server owners, we found one challenge regularly pop up that we know we can help solve. Server owners and staff managers can sometimes struggle with staff training, performance improvements, and creating consistent rule enforcement policies as their communities grow.

What is GSBans?

GSBans is an alternative to other punishment plugins for Minecraft servers, built with a fresh perspective brought in from our work in the gaming industry. We know through our team’s years of experience in the industry, and by running our own Minecraft servers, that keeping a community going strong isn’t just about punishing bad actors: It’s about understanding your community better and keeping your staff team motivated as they work on the front line.

GSBans has all of the common punishment commands that Minecraft servers are already used to, with some modern upgrades that will make your lives as server owners easier and more fulfilling.

GSBans Helps Train Staff Better

We’ve included our research-driven 37 categories of harmful behaviors that happen in multiplayer environments to make it easy for staff to consistently describe the incidents that occur. This makes staff training and onboarding processes smoother, and makes it actually possible to understand what’s happening on your server.

When moderator teams don’t follow consistent formats for their rule enforcement, it becomes impossible for servers to breakdown what is happening in the community.

One server that we looked at with several million punishments recorded over 4 years and 100+ moderators showed over 30,000 different formats, typos, and categories of behaviors in their punishment logs! This means that staff managers are unable to identify problem areas in their community, which prevents server owners from understanding the impact that their advertising campaigns and growth strategies have on the players over time.

Deeper Analytics and Understanding

With 28% of players leaving games entirely when they experience certain toxic behaviors, wouldn’t it be a good idea to know what kind of toxicity is most active on a server so that you can work to prevent it?

That’s why GSBans includes a monthly email report that looks at both the staff performance and player behaviors over the past month with an easy to read and actionable set of statistics. Staff managers can see which team members are most attentive to certain behaviors, and get a solid grasp on how the players are changing over time.

Of course, we wouldn’t be GamerSafer without putting our mission of making gaming safer for millions of players, that’s why we have resources to back you up when there are criminal behaviors or severe harms that are reported through the GSBans plugin. If you run into a serious situation that you’re unsure how to navigate, we want to help you make the right decisions to keep your players safe.

There’s plenty more information over on the GSBans resource page at MC-Market, where we are proud to be launching our plugin for the public to buy for a one-time $5 cost. Check it out at the link below!
