According to Kaspersky, Minecraft is the #1 game for distributed malware

Players all around the world love the long history of incredible customizability in Minecraft. They can change up their gameplay entirely by adding new mobs, blocks, and tools, or even download game exploits like hacks and cheats to give themselves a competitive advantage.


Kaspersky looked at malware in 2021-2022 to see what games were most often targeted, and Minecrafters took the top spot with malware including:

  • Password Stealers
  • Phishing Tools
  • Keyloggers
  • Unwanted File Downloaders

CASE STUDY: BREAKING THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF HATE

A look at how Minecraft servers manage extremism and harassment

We worked closely with the Anti-Defamation League, Take This, the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, and three fantastic third-party Minecraft servers with thousands of players and around 1.5 million chat messages to identify challenges in moderation and opportunities for improvements.

This case study observes activities relating to Minecraft multiplayer moderation, including:

  • Chat activities amongst players, publicly and privately
  • The impact of community guidelines on player behaviors
  • How effective chat moderation is in reducing harms
  • What role extremism, sexism, and other forms of hate and harassment have on communities

BLOCKED WORDS LIST FOR REGEX CHAT FILTERS

A quick list to help you get your Minecraft chat filter plugins setup

This CSV file includes hundreds of words commonly used to harass, bully, or discriminate against other players. It also includes terms generally considered offensive or “adult language”. You can plug this list into your regex chat filter plugin on your MInecraft server.

Note: This list contains some highly offensive and triggering words that may be uncomfortable for some people to see. Please use this list wisely.

A hierarchy of measures for player safety and well-being

We made this Hierarchy of Measures to promote protective strategies and measures within online games. The purpose of these tiers is to help prioritize, implement, and understand the effectiveness of measures that enable a player’s well-being and safety. The hierarchy looks at four tiers of strategies for player safety, including:

  • Prevention
  • Mitigation
  • Information, Education, and Awareness
  • Encouragement

HOW GAMERSAFER WORKS

Step 1 – User securely links their Game Account with their GamerSafer Profile via the app.

Step 2 – When a player logs into the game their account is verified as existing within the GamerSafer Database.

Step 3 – The player will be prompted by the game to authenticate using the GamerSafer App, similar to 2FA.

Step 4 – Access and permissions are automatically granted based on your game’s uniquely defined needs and the preferences of the player.
